A couple days from now is the 89th anniversary of George Young's pioneering Catalina Channel swim (January 15-16, 1927).
One of these days, somebody should swim Catalina on the same day George Young did, because that would be crazy and cool.
(ahem)
Weather permitting...

There's this guy in California who would be perfect for it. His name is... ummmm... let's see... oh, yeah... Evan Morrison. I nominate him.

Heh... actually our buddy @DanSimonelli is doing it! Possibly the link I posted above was too subtle.
Go get it, Dan!!
You gotta be very clear with this group, @evmo. OK, maybe just me. (And LBJ?)
Anyway, good luck @DanSimonelli!
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
We'll be watching Dan! Good luck! Nice to see a cool water, wintertime Catalina crossing!, and from a different start point!! You'll be awesome I have no doubt!!
Dan is shoving off
in a couple hourstomorrow. Local NOAA buoy is reading 61F, actually pretty nice for this time of year.NOAA forecast:
Go Dan!
Thanks @evmo

Good. I can stay up late since it's not a school night.
...anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
Sweet!! Something to do on a Friday night!!
Wait, what? Didn't you just do Catalina like a couple of weeks ago Swimonelli? Is this going to become a weekly thing? Sheesh...
Good luck @DanSimonelli !!

I'm really curious about that loop !
Congrats Dan!

Congratulations! Super swimming!
There's a very good explanation for this:
It's all in the logs which will be released as soon as they've been rewritten and given to the auspices of the sport. In the meantime, all logs are safe in lock box.
It was a mystery current, tidal wave, ground swell, water spout!
I swear!
Squeaky clean.

My phone with GPS Track app was on the boat.
As with my first Catalina swim, Coach-friend-paddler extraordinaire Kevin Eslinger paddled and navigated the whole way.
So, the boat trailed behind, came along side, circled, had fun!
That curly-cue was when Kevin Eslinger needed new batteries for the GPS and we were scurrying around looking for AA's, lagging back and around. The tracker was on Penelope and they swam ahead...
AND if anyone is interested, here is a video documentary of Dan's swim:
What was the range of the water temperature during the swim?

@Leonard_Jansen
Observers recorded 61F/16C all the way.
But, I claim colder since I was cold!

@DanSimonelli The most remarkable scene in the movie is you eating jalapenos in your pre-swim breakfast tacos. Right before getting horizontal in the water and sloshing side-to-side for 13 hours. Is that Pepto Bismol in your feed bottles?

Ha!
Standard fare for So Cal!
I can't have jalapenos 6 hours before a workout, I can not even comprehend having them before getting in the rolling ocean!!!!
What an amazing story, and great video!
Good theory, @Niek !
I'll continue to test that out...
=> My conclusion: The boy ain't right.

Well done Dan!
