Stage 6 is filling up..... Don't panic, but don't wait too long

I don't wear a wetsuit; it gives the ocean a sporting chance.

@david_barra I have been reading about the stages on your website and was curious to know about the "recommended pace". I am assuming the pace is determined by the distance and time before the tide turns. So does this mean if you didn't reach the finish before the flood tide starts you wouldn't have much chance of finishing?
There is a chance, and swimmers are welcome to keep going until they are unable to make forward progress

Best wishes for the fifth annual 8 Bridges Swim. Good luck to all of the participants!
It looks like an impressive group of swimmers. Looking forward to updates like past years.
Good luck to all the 8 Bridges swimmers this week and especially to those going for all seven stages. Awesome. Big shout to Karen Throsby - enjoy swimming all day every day x.
It was a great start to the week. WInd picked up a few hours in, but a strong showing by all!

Enjoying the fb page updates and communications on here. Thanks.
We expect a daily report on the number of lampreys that @KarenT has attached to her when she finishes each stage.

Well that's given me something to occupy my mind during stage 3...
Stage 2 Results:
It was a challenging day on the water for swimmers and kayakers with head winds and patches of rain. All showed great tenacity, staying in the water well after the ebb current had run out. Two swimmers finished:
1. Anna DeLozier 6:30:29
2. Lori King 6:42:03
Greg O'Connor and the New Zealand relay, led by Heather Osbourne, came within one mile of the bridge.
Inspirational efforts all round.

Stage 3 Results
13.1 miles from the Mid-Hudson to Newburgh Beacon Bridge.
100% completion! great job swimmers and kayakers.

Beautiful creative non-fiction, @KarenT . I'd love to read more.
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
Stage 4 Results
Newburgh-Beacon to Bear Mt Bridge 15.2 miles
Another successful day. Perfect day in the water. Great job all!

I hate all these updates! Makes me want to do this swim more and more! (and it was already on my list)
@ssthomas, you could knock out these 7 easy. Plus it is fun. Next year?
If @fil and Loch Ness don't make me go broke first, @gregoc!
@ssthomas Did you know there's a different sea monster on every stage of 8 Bridges?

Love love love seeing all the pictures , some wonderful writing going on as well. Makes me pine to be there again..
This is my 5th trip down the river, and today was the first time I saw sturgeon breaching.... Two of them.... Or maybe it was the same one twice. It (they) were at least 4 feet long.

Mo Siegel is swimming by GPS points, so while everyone else took a rest day, I and kayaker Bill Steele went out for a short 4 hours with Mo from about 2 miles north of the Bear Mtn Bridge (green marker 33)

In 2011, on the night before stage one, I was standing on shore near where stage one starts, and something the size of an atomic submarine rolled on the surface and was gone in no time. I was thinking about it the next day during the swim.
Rumor has it that the current score is @KarenT 4, Lampreys 0. Sorry that the home team isn't making a better showing for our guest.

You boys are being mean to @karent! Lampreys are scary! As are monsters from the deep. We shouldn't mess around with them! Anyone watch the show River Monsters. Not cool!

Mo started the day around 34 th street.... Where he wrapped up yesterday, and finished the 120 miles a few minutes before Lori crossed the Verrazano

When I grow up I want to do ALL 8 Bridges...
I can't wait until I grow up. I want to do them all now!
i don't expect to ever be a grown up but 8 Bridges definitely makes me want to be a better swimmer. i would be happy if i get good enough to achieve a life long all stages, thrilled to be able to do a 'Mo', and while i don't expect to be able to do all stages at once....i never thought i would be where i am today....so maybe why not me .
Rondi and David run an amazing event - we are all very lucky they have created this for our challenge and enjoyment. thanks!
Big props to all the participants, support personnel and, above all, to Rondi and Dave! 8 Bridges is a gem and shows the U.S. marathon swimming community in the best possible light.
Way to go, all!
