We just published documentation of two stunningly beautiful-looking channel swims in the Northland of New Zealand, completed by Sarah Poplar:
- Aorangi (Poor Knights Islands) to Matapouri - second-ever, after the legendary Meda McKenzie
- Taranga (Hen Island) to Waipu - first
These are both reasonably accessible distances, and add another two compelling solo swim options in New Zealand.
Well done, Sarah, Mike, and team!

42 yr old female knocks it out of the park
Sooo many cool places to swim and I'm getting my eyes opened.
Very cool! Love to see swimmers blazing new trails. There's plenty of water out there, folks.

MSF Documented Swims isn't just for massive, record-breaking swims (though we've had a few of those) -- but for anyone wishing to record their feat in a rigorous, standardized, peer-reviewed format. We take equal pride in new marathon swimmers, just getting their feet wet in the sport, who make the extra effort to document.
Today we announce two new Documented Swims by athletes undertaking their first official marathon swim!
Beth Fehr swam 10.4 km around Beavertail "island" in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/fehr-beavertail
Nick Hobson swam 31.3 km along the eastern Lake Michigan shore, from Holland to Grand Haven, MI.
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/hobson-holland-grand-haven
Congratulations and well done, Beth and Nick!
Newly ratified MSF Documented Swims:
Make this a book! An absolutely sensational accomplishment.
John Batchelder's 54 km (33.6-mile) butterfly swim in Lake Powell last September is now documented at:
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/batchelder-powell/
The two narratives - one by the swimmer and one by the crew - are an astonishing testament to the psychological challenges of long swims (not to mention the physical challenge of swimming 28 hours of butterfly). A compelling read!
Congratulations, @batches and team!
Quite an honor and privilege to be a part of this swim.
Congrats to Charlotte Brynn, first to complete a three-way crossing of Lake Willoughby, Vermont:
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/brynn-willoughby/
Thanks to the observing team of Cynthia Needham and Phil White for documenting the achievement.
Angel More made waves last year as the youngest to swim the length of Lake Tahoe and San Francisco's notorious Round-Trip Angel Island, at age 15. The latter was memorably dramatic as she swam in place for nearly an hour at the west end of Alcatraz in Force 5 winds.
Official documentation of the RT Angel Island (piloted by Brent McLain):
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/more-angel-island/
and Lake Tahoe (piloted by Tom Linthicum):
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/more-tahoe/
The future of marathon swimming seems bright with tough, ambitious swimmers like Angel. Congratulations!
Congrats to Bridgette Hobart on her 40 km swim around the perimeter of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. Photos, narrative, and documentation by observer Susan Kirk now published:
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/hobart-hopatcong/
Last fall Craig Coombs became the first person to swim around Alameda Island since 1951. He completed the 24 km route in a new course record of 7:12. Documentation from observer Ranie Pearce is now published at
https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/coombs-alameda/
Congrats to Craig and team for bringing back this historical swim of San Francisco Bay!
Cindy Werhane's swim around Coronado Island is now published as a MSF Documented Swim. This is a beautiful quick 19km swim that can be kayak-piloted without a motorboat. The route proceeds from the far inner reaches of San Diego Bay, past a Navy aircraft carrier, and finishes through the breakers on a wide sandy beach.
Congrats to Cindy & her team including Dan Simonelli and Stephen Rouch ...

We congratulate Adriano Passini of Brazil on a fabulously documented swim from Laje de Santos Island to the mainland coast of Santos, Brazil. Adriano completed the 41 km channel swim in 11 hours, 55 minutes last September. Observer Ashirvad Zaiantchick provided some amazing drone footage.
Check it out at https://marathonswimmers.org/swims/2018/passini-laje-de-santos/

Thank you, @evmo , for all you do!
The 41st and final MSF Documented Swim of 2018 is a doozy: Sarah Eismann @saraheismann's 59 km solo circumnavigtion of Bermuda - only the 3rd-ever after Sean O'Connell (1976) and Lori King (2016). Sarah's documentation includes a remarkable discussion of her difficult post-swim mental recovery:

Congratulations, Sarah and team!
Been there years ago in late November!!! Beautiful place and the water is perfect. Thanks for sharing your swim. Makes me want to return to Bermuda.
Thanks for helping with an explanation to some of the "hallucinations" that I have when swimming on the lake. I like your description of "the brain filling in data when it needs it". Although, I have to say....... I've never seen random Hershey's Kisses on my swims!
