Seems like an ambitious timeline. She also states that April - Sept is the only time she could swim due to the cold, which is incorrect. I do hope she has read Sean's book!

I think the whole thing is a little ambitious for a lady who's never been out of her depth in open water. That's one steep learning curve. :-/

Yawn! Here's hoping she doesn't go to the Ben Hooper School of Open Water swimming...

    Is this fake news?

When will someone announce their "swim around the world" attempt? Seems like a pretty ambitious attempt for a first time swim. There was talk about the dangers of the lack of knowing what you don't know. This might be one of those occasions.

There's this person who is swimming across the Pacific:

One hopes she will involve WOWSA in sanctioning this event, so when she gets out after half a mile it can be a "Certified World Record Attempt."

    Another Ben. Great.

Some interesting quotes from this Ben's website:

[Ben] was the first man to swim across the Atlantic from Boston (USA) to Quiberon (France) without a kickboard

six-month unsupported expedition [to swim across the Pacific]

Ben will be escorted by the support sailboat Discoverer and her nine crew members

No one has ever tried to go so far so slowly

We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams

It seems it was rather more than a step too far for Paula McGuire. The lady seems to have started in April, according to her blog, (although I can find no reports anywhere of where she started or what she did during those four weeks), but has never managed to overcome her fear of the water, so has jacked it in.

@KatieBun if you are interested then there is a lot more information on what has been happening on her Facebook page paulamusttryharder.

I must confess I have a sweet spot for her attempt.

No doubt it was totally bonkers in scope and ambition for someone who has a history of crippling anxiety and a fear of swimming but she seemed genuine in a lot of the preparations. She had even reached out to Sean for information and encouragement which by all accounts he was happy to provide.

Unlike some other infamous record attempts she has very quickly and publicly declared her's to be a failure, and gone to some length to explain what happened.

I think recently I have grown tired of being cynical (shock!) and I have no doubt there will be a lot of things to criticize about the preparation for her attempt but maybe because of my own history with anxiety (not so much myself but people I am close to) I think she is pretty awesome and hope she continues to fight her demons and raise awareness around mental health issues.

Thanks for the extra info, @phodgeszoho I was quite sad to read the blog post and did admire her honesty. I just seem to have missed the whole of the previous month.

Have just found it and read back through the posts. Thank you. Wish I'd known where to find it! Am just wondering if she might have found it less frightening if she'd been swimming alongside Fiona Quinn, who's making her way round on a SUP.
