Pittsburgh--the city where I spent a lot of my childhood!

Leonard, I notice they keep referring to teams. Is this swim a relay or solo or both? (I'm definitely not ready for that distance solo, but just curious.)

If it's a relay, might be something to consider further down the road, depending on how many swimmers can be on a team and how they set up the relay--i.e., do people swim a certain amount of time, then next swimmer, etc. Or is by miles, i.e. 1st swimmer goes 5-10k, then next swimmer, the same distance, etc.?

Right now my max swim is 8 miles, and I'm thinking about either another 8 miler or something slightly longer. I'm kind of a work in progress marathon swimming-wise. :)

I saw that, but it was vague as to its status for this year

@ForeverSwim just had a baby- I think things are vague after you just have a baby. :-) I know he wants to make it open to as many people as possible, but babies sometimes change things (or so I've heard). I'm sure he'll update us all as soon as he knows. It's a great event!

Good Morning! Thank you everyone for your interest in the 2017 3RMS. My apologies for being remiss, as it seems it has been a while since I've been on to post. Thank you @ssthomas for providing an update :-)

The 2017 3RMS will be open for a mass start of 15 marathon swimmers on Saturday, September 23, 2017. This will be a solo event only with application available via the race website (http://www.darren-miller.com/three-rivers-marathon-swim/) beginning April 1, 2017. I do not have a entrance fee as of this time, but as all of our 3RMS alumni know, we will keep it as affordable as possible. My dream for this race has always been about building as much camaraderie between swimmers as possible, and not worrying as much about the cost to get you there!

We launch at 7AM with powered escorts, kayaking teams and all crew from Kayak Pittsburgh North Shore, (https://www.ventureoutdoors.org/kayak-pittsburgh-north-shore/) and head over to "the Point" (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/point/) where swimmers will begin with a water start from the Point State Park Fountain. I wait until daybreak for safety reasons, so +/- 7:30AM.

    • Swimmers will have the option to bring (2) crew members aboard the powered escort which will follow the swimmer at a safe distance throughout the race
    • Swimmers will have two kayak volunteers to flank them at all times
    • Swimmers can bring their own kayakers with them, however, not their own kayaks. Part of the entrance fee goes to cover the kayaks from Kayak Pittsburgh North Shore who have been kind enough to allow us a 50% discount, plus the ability to launch from the Allegheny Landing dock
    • Crew, including own kayakers, will be made known via the race application

Swimmers will swim north, current assist, along 5K of the Ohio River where they will turn around at Brunot Island, and swim 5K, against the current, back to the city. Once the swimmers hit the Point State Park 10K mark, they will begin swimming against the current to the half-way point (15K) on the Monongahela River, for the Hot Metal Bridge turnaround point Swimmers will return to the starting point once again for the 20K mark. Swimmers will make the turn around the Point, and head out against the tide of 5K of the Allegheny River to the 40th Street Bridge, and head back (current assist) the final 5K to the Point (along the city-side of the Allegheny) the original starting point, for a buoy finish. Swimmers will exit the water via their powered escort, and return to the Kayak Pittsburgh North Shore location. #rockstar

Finishing awards, banquet dinner and dancing TBD!

    • Distance: 30K - 10K, out-and-back 5K, in each of the three rivers; Ohio (1) Monongahela (2) and Allegheny (3)
    • Format: 2 kayakers/swimmer, powered escort boat and Pittsburgh River Rescue/Police in support
    • Water Temperature: Wide range. Average 70F Low, 74F High; Air Temperature 56F Low, 71F High
    • Water Conditions: Usually calm during first 10K (Ohio River), boat traffic and potential headwinds churn up the Monongahela and the Allegheny Rivers. Overall, current is minimal. Keep in touch with local river conditions (http://www.pitt.edu/~crew/conditions.html)
    • **Time Cutoff: **Strict 12-hours cut-off. 4-hour 10K pace. I don't want people out in the dark, and rather them alongside their fellow marathon swimmer at the finishing award banquet!
    • Swimming Attire: http://marathonswimmers.org/rules/. Wear your Speedo, cap and goggles kids...

The 2017 3RMS will once again be a charity fundraising event for Team Forever, which directly benefits the Forever Fund at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Please visit www.darren-miller.com for a history of the charity, with full financial reports since 2010 always available for review. Interested swimmers can stay tuned to my website, Facebook updates (3RMS page coming soon), the Marathon Swimmers Forum. You are always welcome to direct any questions to me at dmiller@darren-miller.com.

Looking forward to the world coming to the 'City of Bridges' this September!

    Cheers to ADVENTURE!

For those interested, which I understand may not be all that many:

I was curious how quickly the rivers flow, given that half of this swim is upstream. While there are links to the volumetric flow rates from the race website, turning that into linear speed is not all that simple, given that you need the cross sectional area at a given point, and all sorts of other variables. However, I was able to find this helpful website, that does a rough job at turning reported flow rates (available through NWS or USGS) into linear speeds.

Short answer: I still need to work on speed work, but not as badly as I thought. Thankfully.

    Tim,
Thanks for the post! In our experience (since 2013) the Allegheny River flow has been stronger than the Ohio and the Monongahela. During the 2014 race, our swimmers fought off a stronger flow as they swam north, however the benefit was a nice current coming back! It was a 3/1 time differential based on the final out-n-back leg of the last 10K. I like to keep this as the third leg because it is the most picturesque with the city skyline and the North Shore (PNC Park; yes, the Pirates will be battling the Cardinals as you swim back!) on both sides. The other years, there was still a slight flow, however, nothing a well-trained swimmer couldn't handle. Looking forward to continue posting updates.

One week away from the 2017 3RMS!! Thought I would throw out a nice race report from @ssthomas on her 2015 3RMS adventure for all our swimmers coming to Pittsburgh this coming week!! CHEERS :)

First off- this is a beautiful swim. There are about a million cool old bridges to swim under and a fun mix of urban swimming and swimming in nature. It was surprising to me how quickly city turned to trees and back again. I also got my fair share of backstroke in swimming under the bridges- probably the most backstroke I've done in one day EVER!

It started with a pre-race meeting on Friday evening, that I missed. Fortunately, Darren and Alli were able to give me the run down pretty quickly and John Humenik walked me to where the start was. The race course is pretty simple- Start in the Allegheny, swim about a 6k out into the Ohio, swim around the island and back to the Monongahela. Swim a 5k up the Monagahela, turn around and swim back to the Allegheny. Swim a 5k up the river and a 4k back to the finish, for a 30k total. Since we had two kayakers each (I had my amazing sister Melody and the wonderful Alli to look after me) and a pretty straight forward course, I wasn’t worried about getting lost.

Saturday morning, we all met around 6:15 at the start and got started pretty much right on time at 7:30 am. Just before the race started, John asked if I’d like to swim together for the day. It seemed like a good idea, so after a short tactical discussion about feed schedules (he feeds every 20 minutes to my 30), we were all set. We all jumped in for the start, Darren gave us a 10 second count down (before I had a chance to finish peeing!), and we were off. The water was 80 degrees, which is boiling hot for me, but I think the others were fine with it. Four of us, myself, John, Kristin and Chris, swam together for the first 40 minutes or so. After that, John and I slowly pulled away, though Kristin and Chris were never too far behind. It was Kimberly’s longest swim ever, and reports were that she was happy for the entire swim.

John and I managed to swim happily together all day. Well, it was happily on my end. You’d have to ask him to be sure about his opinion. We fell into a pretty good rhythm pretty early on and seemed to hold a steady pace throughout the day. I never got overly hot since there was some pretty decent cloud cover off and on most of the day. We had my feeds on dry ice, so they were delightfully cold all day. One of my favorite moments of the day was when we came around the point from the Mon into the Allegheny, we saw John’s dad and sister cheering us on. His sister even jumped in for a little to swim with us. Turns out she took a turn with all of us throughout the day.

The only time I noticed the boat traffic was the last 10k in the Allegheny, but our kayakers did a great job of keeping the boats away, so other than the occasional terrifying underwater whir of a quickly approaching boat and then the following waves from their wake, it wasn’t too stressful. We caught a little current the last hour on the Allegheny, which was nice. As we approached the finish, John started to sprint, so I had to sprint harder to catch up. We tagged the finish buoy together at 7 hours and 48 minutes. That’s definitely the longest I’ve ever swum side by side with someone- and I have to say it was pretty fun. John and I both had moments we were struggling, and it was nice (at least for me) to have someone else there to share it with.

Darren ran a really fun race- it was well supported and organized. I’m sure there are a million things to consider if he opens it up to more than 5 of us, but I really hope he can get everything nailed down for the future because this is a swim worth swimming! And, as it always is, it was fun to meet new swimmers and to hear about where they were at in their swimming journeys.

Thanks for a great swim, Darren!

Congratulations to all! Awesome performances, course record.... and BUTTERFLY?! My very, very humble goal: swim 100 fly in a meet!

Freestyle I can last hours. Fly.... once did a 50 fly in a meet (at my coach's urging) and seriously wondered how ppl lasted 200 let alone marathon swims. So I've made it a goal to improve this stroke w the idea that it could also help my freestyle speed.

    18 miles fly?! INSPIRED!

John and I swam the same amount of time at our lake the other day. He was doing fly, and I was doing free. I got to the finish point sooner, so I swam back out to meet him. I thought (stupidly), "I'll swim the last bit fly with him." I swam about 150 yards and almost died. John gained a solid 15 yards on me over that time as well, even though he'd been swimming fly for an hour and a half already. It's impressive. Though, my fly is horrid, so it's probably not a good comparison. ;-)

If you lastep 150 yds, your fly isn't too horrible! And how many can go over 100 miles free
