I started to have a look at the CS&PF and CSA statistics for the 2016 season.

Numbers are up on last year but that was no surprise.

Here's what the distribution of completion times looks like over the same period. (Doubles are treated as two single crossings.)

It's interesting that Florence Chadwick's 1950 EC time was in the 33rd percentile. For some reason, I always imagined ye olde time swimmers as being slower than today.

I don't wear a wetsuit; it gives the ocean a sporting chance.

Clearly shows impact of poor weather on the 2015 season - going against the overall upward trend.

Where would Florence Chadwick's swim fit when compared to all F-E swims? Only E-F swims are allowed now and they take longer, as a rule.

great work, guys. @phodgeszoho what are your main takeaways from this? Was there any specific question you were looking at?

Have added a scatter chart of the swim times and types, break down by type of fastest, slowest and averages. Also added the number of swims overlaid on the tide/weather.

@bruck - I wasn't looking for anything in particular. I did these for a post last year (link below) and was just updating them for 2016. Also I am a bit of a nerd with chronic insomnia so it helps to pass the time. :-)

One thing I did notice this year that I found interesting was that the % of male versus female solo swims has shifted towards the men. Considering the recent dominance of women in open water endurance swimming I guess I had expected this to have shifted the other way.

    2016 Male Solo Crossings / Swimmers: 85 / 84

    2016 Female Solo Crossings / Swimmers: 48 / 39

Since 2012 (almost 50/50) there seems to be a slight trend towards more men doing solo swims.

Fascinating. Thanks, Philip. Am trying to download the updated version with the scatter graph, but am still getting the original. Apologies. I'm probably doing something wrong.

Would you say the averages for the 2 associations are different because of specific swimmers like Chloe, bringing down the average time? Or does anyone else see another reason?
