I have considered it - I live in Virginia and travel expenses are a bit of an issue - I have never done a 10 mile swim, but I like that there is an option to do just the one way, 5 miles. I am going to ramp up my hours in the lake and pool, and have not ruled it out yet. Would love to hear about others thoughts as well.

You may want to consider the Swim For Life in Chestertown, MD on 14 July.

They have 1,2,3,4,5 mile courses. The 5 can be a bit tough depending on the tides, but it's fun regardless.

  • I am coming from Western Australia for the 5 mile swim. It is difficult to motivate myself to get out of bed in the mornings to go training - it's winter here and quite cold! I am trying to do between 15kms and 20kms per week in the pool. I have never swum in a lake before and am quite scared of the weeds and what might be lurking in them. At least I know there will be no sharks. If I can go all the way to Minnetonka from Western Australia nvr2late can easily do it from Virginia!

    Hi from a fellow Aussie!
I'm entered in the 10 mile (hope my shoulders last). I jump at any opportunity to do a swim that is a drivable distance from Chicago. Looking forward to it! Might bring the kids

I am now entered in the 10 mile swim at Lake Minnetonka. Kayak rental - check - waiting to hear from a kayak escort. How can one thank or adequately compensate a "volunteer" kayaker - what a wonderful thing for someone to do - how important they are!
  • YAY! more people coming to the 10 mile. I think food would be the best way to reward your kayaker haha. Have you been put on the list of people needing a kayaker? We are all really excited about this event! And the volunteers are more then willing to help in any way possible.

If there is a serious question embedded here (and I agree, good kayak escort-navigators can never be thanked enough), may I suggest a gift card to REI, EMS, or similar.

Have fun at the swim! It would be a kind of "dead body observed in the lake" thing for me.

I have contacted Tommy at his kayak rental and I got one of the last of his kayaks - he told me that he will put me in contact with a kayak volunteer. I am psyched to get there!
