Maxim Sports Nutrition products, after more than 20 years in Europe and Canada, are now available in the United States. The three core products with unique formulations (available online from Maxim Sports Nutrition USA www.maximsportsnutrition.com) include Maxim Carbo Loader, Maxim Hypotonic Sports Drink, and Maxim Hydration Tablets.
• Maxim Carbo Loader is "the fuel of the English Channel" and is an ideal carbohydrate mix with maltodextrin, vitamin C and vitamin E that can be used before or during endurance races or training days. It has been the most recognized sports nutrition brand for channel swimmers.
• Maxim Hypotonic Sports Drink has a unique blend of carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to provide the body with consistent and sustained energy while giving cells the nutrients needed for extended training and race days. This single nutritional source in three amazing flavors provides key ingredients for performance so there is no need for additional electrolytes. It has been used by endurance athletes around the world.
• Maxim Hydration Tablets contain carbohydrates, sodium, potassium, and magnesium to keep you properly hydrated during training or racing that lasts less than two hours.
Maxim is known as the original sports nutrition brand since it was the first company to develop an energy powder drink (Maxim Carbo Loader). Maxim Carbo Loader has a neutral flavor while Maxim Hypotonic Sports Drink and Maxim Hydration Tablets are available in a variety of great tasting flavors. All products are also gluten free.

I highly recommend doing your feed research during your long training swims and see which products work best for you and your metabolism. Yes, use your own body as your laboratory in your training, so on game day all you have to do is get and do it.
I and others would still like to know about the availability of Maxim most especially in the UK. It was as @Anne points out, heavily used in Dover, Freda fed her training swimmers on it until recently when it became impossible to find. There area lot of people who would like to know the answer to this question.

When I first started training in Dover, Maxim was the standard feed on the beach. Freda had supplies of it for swimmers and it was also easy to buy online in the 2kg tubs. It was also the standard feed on Swimtrek Long Distance Week. Then, in a puff of smoke at the end of 2011, it seemed to just disappear. I know that it is possible to source it occasionally online in the pricier 500g tubs or old stock via eBay, but there doesn't seem to be a steady supply of it any longer. Maybe there isn't a demand for the "Carbo Loader" product other than for Channel swimmers. I know that it is possible to buy it overseas. e.g. on the link provided by @Niek but I don't really want to pay overseas postage when I used to be able to get it in the UK and given that there are alternative products available for purchase in the UK.
After it became difficult to source the Maxim Carbo Loader, then in 2012 and 2013 we were fed Vyomax Maxi on the beach which is easily obtainable in the UK in large quantities. I can tolerate Maxim Carbo Loader far better than Maxi and I know others who have the same anecdote. I guess that Maxi has a different DE to Maxim Carbo Loader - but I can't find this information for either product.
So, if @maximsportsnutrition is (still) reading, please can we have the Maxim Carbo Loader back in the UK in the 2kg tubs?
I actually have a question too. My girlfriend (an OW swimmer, but that's incidental) has celiac disease, meaning she cannot consume gluten, or even any food produced in the same facility with gluten-containing products.
Is Maxim gluten-free? If so, is it produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility?
Thanks.
Is the Maxim now being sold in the USA the exact same product that was previously sold in Europe?
The Carbo Loader is what has been used for many years in the channel.
The newest product Hypotonic Sports drink is the same brilliant maltodextrin (carbs) found in Maxim Carbo Loader but, has 25 of the essential vitamins and minerals your body also needs and comes in 3 great tasting flavors so - no more mixing.
To boost your carbs you can mix the two and also make to your taste/ sweetness liking.

We use both wheat and maize as source of maltodextrin, however it is confirmed that it is GLUTEN FREE conform <20 ppm/ds, as it complies with the requirements for the 'gluten-free' labelling of foods in Codex Standard 118-1979 (rev. 2008) and in Commission Regulation (EC) N° 41/2009
Maxim is it produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility
The Carbo Loader has been great to "top up" my fuel in the morning before training or racing (with scoops in my oatmeal and orange juice or coffee). This has 58g of carbohydrate (maltodextrin) in each serving (3 scoops) with vitamin C and vitamin E.
I use the Hypotonic Sports Drink during my training or racing which has 54g of carbohydrate (maltodextrin) per serving and many more vitamins (including lots of B vitamins for great energy!) and minerals including sodium, potassium, magnesium. This has been a single nutrition source for me during training and racing. The website has scientific benefit wheels for each product which helps describe what is in each of the products and the benefits of these ingredients.
http://www.maximsportsnutrition.com I hope you find that information helpful!

The distributor in England is:
Energy Sports UK
Owner: Steve Perrins
Email: s.perrins@energysports.co.uk
www.energysports.co.uk
The only size available is 500gr which some people have found. To purchase what was previously available in single 2kg tubs will increase the cost over the bulk size by 50%. No-one I know bought the 500g tub, it was just too small and too expensive.
I spoke with Steve Perrins the UK distributor:
We have been selling Maxim for many years but we now are the distributors of Maxim in the UK since early last year.
The 2kg tubs of Carb Loader were our best selling product but Maxim stopped producing them in Europe which is why we sell the 500g tins, unfortunately the UK Government decided to include VAT on sports nutrition late 2012 so hence it is a little more expensive.
I have added a 4 x 500g Carb Loader product (total weight 2kg) and reduced the cost to £23 which should bring it in-line with the old 2kg tub. http://www.energysports.co.uk/product.php?ProductID=753&Section=Category
I will speak to Maxim again about the 2kg tubs but in the meantime I hope the new pricing and 4 pack of carb loader will be of interest for the marathon swimmers.

I've known for ages that energysports were the UK distributor, but it was far pricier pro-rata in the 500g tubs compared to the 2kg tubs. I also used to be able to buy it in the high street at Holland & Barrett, which was nice and convenient, but it's no longer sold in shops.
A good result and thank you to energysportsuk for taking the comments on board.

keenly following above discussion @maximsportsnutrition. I'm not a swimmer but an avid cyclist based in the UK and have been looking to experiment with my training and racing nutrition for improved results. I couldn't get CarboPro as this seems to be only based in the US but I did get hold of carbo loader and the hypotonic drink. In the Cycling community people who use carbopro (which seems quite similar to carbo loader) are able to load up multiple scoops of the stuff for 5-7 hour gran fondos. I was hoping to try this with the Carbo loader as the advice on your website states only to take it 2-3 hours BEFORE exercise rather than during (http://maximsportsnutrition.com/products/carbo-loader-drink/ -- i did note a comment earlier here where you seem to have suggested the contrary). The hypotonic drink (which is the drink advised for during exercise) would be too sweet if concentrated to accommodate 5 hours of exercise so i can't use that as a primary energy source on the go but would do as part of my hydration.
My questions are two-fold:-
1) what is the difference between carbo pro and carbo loader? - are the chain lengths of the polymer different? is it the maltodextrin source? i gather longer chains (6-7 in CP) are better absorbed. I'm trying to work out the reasoning behind the difference in your guidance for 2-3 hours before exercise.
2) can i concentrate the carbo loader in a similar way to carbo pro for 5 hours of exercise in one bottle - going for 200 - 250kcal/hour (something like 12 or so scoops in a 750-1000ml bottle) as a primary energy source??
many thanks
If you are training for a cycling event or triathlon the optimum means to keep hydrated and obtain optimum performance would be to add as suggested, 2-4 scoops of Carbo Loader into your pre-race food 2-3 hours prior to your race/workout. This will start you off with the optimum energy levels and calories for your race/ride. Hourly you should take 60-90g of Hypotonic Sports Drink in a 32 oz. water. Hypotonic Sports Drink is the only product which will offer you ALL 25 of the essential vitamins and minerals your body will need for maximum performance- as suggested by medical experts. The Carbo Loader followed by Hypotonic Sports Drink combination will offer you the adequate energy/calories for up to 7 hours of racing without any other nutrition. If you are racing beyond 7 hours you will need to supplement your nutrition with proteins and or fats. Professional cyclists and triathletes have used this formula for many years. If you would like to use just the Carbo Loader for racing you can do so, but you should supplement Carbo Loader with other food/ nutrition which will offer the additional vitamins and minerals required for maximum cellular performance. The website has a Scientific illustration for you to follow for supplementing Carbo Loader.
Carbo Loader is the Original Sports Nutrition. Carbo pro is a product that came onto the market after Carbo Loader and is a good alternative when you cannot buy Carbo Loader. Carbo Loader is made from a unique European maltodextrin blend which offers simply the best energy source and the best maltodextrin for digestion- no Gi issues with Maxim. Countless open water swimmers will attest to this including Craig Lenning, Laura Borgelt, Anne Cleveland, Kathleen Wilson to name a few.
The pre-race Carbo Loader followed by the Hytpotonic Sports Drink during racing formula has been tried and tested for many years and is used by many pro cyclists and pro teams. As recently as a few weeks ago, USA former National Cycling Champion and current pro triathlete Lewis Elliot, used this combination while racing at the Barn Burner Mountain Bike race in Flagstaff AZ. He was the only racer and pro who did not slow down on his 5th/last lap and was 5 minutes ahead of prior years performance on the last lap- which he admits was because of the Carbo Loader/Hypotonic Sports Drink formula. His race time was just over 5 hours duration like you are doing. Lewis like so many competitive athletes has had no GI issues, no nausea, no getting sick and no more bonking since using Maxim exclusively for races up to 7 hours in length.
We suggest you use one 32 oz. bottle per hour with the 3 - 4.5 scoops of Hypotonic Sports Drink as indicated on the website. Please let us know if you have any other questions and if you would like for us to contact you directly to help you with your plan. We would be happy to do so.
