Swimming Lake Michigan, South of Chicago

I have a meeting south of Chicago on Monday at noon. I'm going to fly in Sunday night to have dinner and I was hoping to get a swim in Lake Michigan Monday morning early. My hotel is off of I-90, right on the Indiana border and I see that there is a beach (Calumet Park) a couple miles up the highway. I'd like to get in a couple miles and still make it back to my hotel in time to shower, pack and get to my meeting by noon, so I can't really drive too far. Does anyone have any experience swimming from that beach? Are the life guards going to freak out if I swim beyond the beach area? Is it safe? (I notice what appear to be some significant shipping ports nearby). Should I bring my ISHOF? Is there a better alternative close by?

Yes, the guards at most Chicago city beaches may freak out if you get too adventuresome, but the ones at the Point / 57th St Beach will leave you alone.
Go in late morning and you may even run into Ted Erikson or Connie Wennenberg.

I'm there right now. Lovely. Water's really warmed up. About 69
But for MSF, I might never have experienced this gem.

I was looking for information on swimming in Lake Michigan from the Ohio Street Beach. My wife is running the marathon in two weeks and I thought I could slip in a little swim in Lake Michigan. My only concern is that the website states that the beaches are closed. Anyone know if I will cause a ruckus by swimming there? I don't actually know when I can get it in due to travel, packet pick-up and the actual race but I am thinking afternoon on Sunday while my wife recovers.
Thanks for any information you can provide!
Excellence is born of preparation, dedication, focus and tenacity; compromise on any of these and you become average.
Hi
It won't be a problem. What is the date of the marathon?
The best place to swim is off Promontory Point, Hyde Park. It's a bit south of the loop, and worth the trip.
You shouldn't be bothered by police if you swim at Ohio St beach, though. I've done heaps of off-season swimming there.

I'm pretty much evangelical about Lake Michigan swimming. But I'm having more screws put in my ankle on Oct 9th, so probably can't join you .
I stayed in a hotel overlooking the Ohio Street Beach last fall, long after the official closing of the beach, and I saw swimmers doing laps around that cove all day long.

Is it safe/allowed to swim at promontory point at any time of day? For example, late afternoon? I really have no idea about the etiquette/safety for lake swimming.
Technically/legally, I think swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on duty at 57th St Beach.
In practice, swimmers who look like swimmers, entering the water via the latter on the Point, are typically not bothered outside lifeguard hours.
Summer weekend afternoons, watch out for rogue jetskis.
I'd recommend hooking up with the morning crowd (6am weekdays, 7am weekends) a few times, feel things out, and then proceed from there on your best judgment.
Thanks! I am moving next week and it appears that many pools are closed until after labor day. I'm figuring it out though!
@abbygirlrose: Post when you get to your new residence, or PM me or ChickenOSea.
The beach closes at 7 p.m., and after that the JetSleds are usually a nuisance.
The Park District beach season ends Monday, September 3, but distance swimmers continue on for several weeks. Usually lots of folks hang out by the ladders on nice weekends. You'll see a line of buoys stretching to a pier; swim inside that line. Boats come awfully close. And wear a bright-colored swim cap for safety.
Last night was a pre-full moon swim (tonight is less good meteorologically).
Thanks so much! I am moving tuesday and hoping to get a swim in that afternoon! I look forward to meeting you all!
Had an unfortunate experience at The Point yesterday evening, when around 5-6 jetskiers entered the swimming area, passed within a few meters of my friend and me, and proceeded to sweep by the beach, where there were still a lot of people on the water. They were quite aware of us and the others at the beach. When we yelled at them to get the }#%^ out, one of them said words to the effect of “what’s your problem?”.
I’m infuriated. My friend called the police, who said they’d notify the coastguard. I’m not sure whose jurisdiction this is.
Also I’ll try uploading this picture I took of a very large boat that cruises on into the swimming area not long before the JetSki incident.
I’m livid. My fear is that things escalate, it’s the swimmers who will lose. The prevailing mentality in these parts is more in favour of the drunken, small-membered idiots on boats than it is for the swimmer.
Not as convenient if you are at U of C but North suburbs, after labor day, no one really bothers you
It’ll calm down here after labour day, too. Still, though. Really makes me mad
