Hello All,
Just moved to Baltimore, Maryland for the summer and I am looking to connect with some fellow open water swimmers. I am living in the Johns Hopkins area, and am training for some open water swims in August. Please let me know if you have any recommendations!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

You should talk to @JBirrrd and @Franco. I think they are both in that area.

I just got back from a 10 mile swim here today.

I'll be out of town 3 out of the next 7 weekends at events but feel free to PM me if you want to get out some time.

The Arundel Breakfast Club gets out several days a week in the Annapolis area. I can get you contact info for them if you would like.

    Welcome to the area.

I'm also in Baltimore, MD and looking to do my first open water swims this summer. Would appreciate suggestions for who to contact in the area about groups to train with. I've heard of the Arundel Breakfast Club but in the past have been unable to find contact info online.

If Annapolis is convenient for you I can get you contact info for Arundel Breakfast Club.

I usually swim with a small group from the Towson Merritt Athletic Club Masters team, We usually go to Hammerman in White Marsh or North Point State Park in Edgemere.

It is still only about 40 degrees in the Bay right now and I will probably wait until it gets in the low 50's. I haven't received any emails from ABC yet so I imagine they are waiting for the water to warm up as well.

    Feel free to PM me.

  • Hi Kerry,

I'm in Baltimore too! I swim up at Meadowbrook in Mt Washington, which is a great facility if you are in the city itself. I've heard of ABC as well, but I'm pretty sure it's out of reach for this car-less New York transplant.

    47 today, won't be long!

  • I also swim at Hammerman on Saturdays or Sundays a few times a month. It is pretty good place to get some OW practice. My only quibble is that if I am there a bit later the guards will not let me swim past the "open" beaches. It just depends which guards are working.

I have also done a few workouts at Sandy Point which is very similar but there is more chop in the water. I am planning to go there a bit more since I got in the Bay Bridge swim this year.

I also found out that the Daniels Area of Patapsco state park has a section for swimming: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/patapscodaniels.aspx

I just stumbled upon it on a recent hike and thought I may give it a go this spring. I don't know anything about the water quality or how crowded it gets but I definitely think I may give it a whilr.

Lastly, I found out some information about the ABC group:

"Our team leader is Andy Grannell and our open water coordinator is Maureen Rohrs." I have Maureen's email but I don't want to post it without her permission. PM me if you would like it. I am going to try and squeeze in a few swims with them on weekends this spring.

    Good luck!

That Daniels swim area looks interesting

  • While this is not really in Baltimore, the lake is a fantastic place to swim:

Racine has some sort of contract that allows them to use the lake periodically for races and practice swims. I did one last year and found it to be decent open water practice.

Going to the first one this Sunday in balmy 62 degree water.

A few of us were out on Saturday, rough water with the wind blowing across the Bay

Any recommendations for swimming in the Leonardtown area? I'm heading there over Memorial Day weekend to meet the future father-in-law. Can you swim in the Potomac down that way?

You can swim in the Potomac at Point Lookout State Park. The park is really crowded on weekends and holidays. Check out this link from St, Mary's County for some other options.

There is water everywhere around you and your future father in law may know of a local boat ramp or private beach on Breton Bay.

Thanks @Franco , I'm thinking then this is a just get in and watch out for boats scenario :)

Also, there is Lake Conoy at the park. It has an upper and lower part and you can swim in those, but the problem is that the water that separates the two is very shallow in spots. Also, if you swim there you may feel "things" swimming under you - they are stingrays.
