Hello Swimmers,
I'd like to introduce you to the (2nd annual) 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim...
From June 25 - July 2, David Barra ( @david_barra ) and Rondi Davies ( @rondi ), in collaboration with Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers (CIBBOWS), will present the second annual seven-stage 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim.
From the peaceful Catskills to the dramatic Narrows, swimmers will cover more than half of the Hudson River's great stream, from the Rip Van Winkle Bridge in Hudson down to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge — the throat of the New York Harbor. For one week, each day's marathon swim will begin just North of one bridge and end on the South side of the next, covering distances ranging from 13.2 miles to 19.8 miles.
The swim will string together the Rip Van Winkle Bridge; Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge; the Mid-Hudson Bridge; Newburgh-Beacon Bridge; Bear Mountain Bridge; the Tappan Zee Bridge; the George Washington Bridge; and finally, the spectacular Verrazano Narrows Bridge, covering over 100 miles of rolling river.
Up to twelve swimmers are invited to swim an individual stage, or the whole thing for an epic journey. Race Director Barra dubs it a "weeklong open-water swimming odyssey to celebrate the mighty Hudson and the New York Harbor".
Full details and schedules for each stage are available at www.8bridges.org. Public viewing will be possible along many places on the River.

We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
...anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
The finish of stage 6.
MIMS swimmers experience a similar view, but closer to the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge. Passing Spuyten Duyvel was certainly a highlight of this stage.

Grace van der Byl has signed up to attempt the whole distance this year... we are thrilled to have her "on board"! I have no doubt she will set the bar high!

How much current push do you get from any of those swims?
There are calculations on the web site for minimum average pace one should be able to hold to complete each stage. These are based on the predicted current speeds for the dates.

Outside of the city, which stages are, in your opinion, the prettiest?
Stage 4; Bannerman's Island and castle ruins, West Point, the deepest and most serpentine section of the river, and Breakneck Mtn.
Stage 1 passes the Saugerties Lighthouse
Stage 2; The Kingston and Esopus Lighthouses
Stage 3 is short, straight and sweet.
Stage 5; Indian Point nuclear plant, Sing Sing prison
Each has its charm. If you like lighthouses... I'd recommend 1 or 2.
Natural beauty... 4 and 6.

If there is anyone out there waiting for the last minute... it has arrived and past.
Message me or email dvdbarra@yahoo.com if you would like to swim it on June 22.
We need a minimum of 5 participants. The current predictions are strong for this day, it should be fast.
There is an outrigger canoe race also taking place in the NY Harbor that day... we will be crossing paths with some of the racers.
