New Catalina Channel overall record - Grace van der Byl

Grace van der Byl just broke Karen Burton's 18-year old overall record between Catalina Island and the California mainland. Just a few minutes ago, she touched shore in 7 hours, 27 minutes (the old record was 7:43).

Grace was a pace swimmer on my Catalina swim last year, and has paddled on many, many, others. For those who know her, the record couldn't have fallen to a nicer, more deserving person. Grace is also known for swimming all seven stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim.

    Having seen Grace swim @ 8 Bridges this year - and watching her go by me like I was standing still - I can't say I'm surprised. She also has one of the best techniques I've ever seen. And yes, she is almost too nice to believe. We're going to hear a lot more from her in the future.
