Currency Exchange -- English Channel Swims

As we know, most -- all? of the captains require final payment for the escort to be given in cash prior to boarding the boat. For those of us who aren't British, how do you handle your currency exchange? Do you tend to do it prior to travel, hiding it carefully so that it isn't stolen while you sleep on the transatlantic flight? Or, do you change it at the airport upon arrival? Or, are there banks that will change money in the Dover area?

I had this problem last summer. After extensive research trying to avoid travelling with cash -without success-, I only had 2 options: exchange at home, and travel with 3000 GPB in my pocket, or travel with 4000 EUR and exchange at the airport. I opted for the 1st option, but due to problems with my bank I ended up travelling with 4000 EUR and exchanged at the airport. I found rates were quite fair, and more or less the same in each exchange company.
I stored the money in this elastic belt I use when running: https://www.hanker-sports.com/cinturones/252-5560-cinturon-trail-runnig-tope.html#/37-color-gris/40-talla-s_m

Thanks for the info. Did you get any grief from customs in either country for having that much cash?
As long as it is less than $10k in the US and £10k in the UK you should not have to declare it!
Exactly, you don't even have to declare it.
