Garmin inreach for swimmers

analittlesanaanalittlesana Washington, DC, USANew Member

Has anyone used a garmin inreach while swim training? When I'm swimming in the ocean I lock my phone in my car and then my keys to a lockbox. Sometimes when swims inevitably go longer than planned, I feel anxious that loved ones might also be anxious. I also always do think about emergency situations as well.

Curious if other people have used the garmin inreach for this purpose. I know the garmin data subscription limits how many messages you can send but I think even just having live track would be helpful. I'm very averse to bringing my phone on a swim.

I use mine for long swims but only events with a support boat. My husband often suggests I put it in my towfloat on training swims but I don't tend to go far from my base. I prefer to do loops in training. It would definitely be useful for solo training swims in case of emergency. I can't say we've ever sent an emergency message from it. We bought ours originally as emergency contact when exploring remote parts of Namibia.

I use the LiveTrack option on my Garmin, but you have to be within reach of your phone for it to start, so I suppose that doesn't help. I just stick my phone into a bag which then goes into my buoy, though.
