Rites of passage.....merit badges?

I was back in the open water this weekend for the first time since my Mobile Bay swim and finally got my first jelly fish sting.

I've been dreading getting one, because I've never had one before and so many people have very different reactions. Some mild, some severe, you aren't really sure how you'll react until you get one.

While I was focusing on keeping on swimming (although, it wasn't as bad as I'd made it out in my head that it would be), I was thinking about the various rites of passage that OW swimmers experience........and then I travelled to that creative place in my head that connected these rites with the "badging" phenomenon that we see in the workplace.....

"longest stretch of logging in" -- you get a badge.
"certification in....." -- you get a badge......
and so on.

THEN, I was trying to think of the icons that would appear on the badges, like scouts have, that people could sew on their swim bags, their parkas, etc.........

And then the swim was finished.

So, what rites of passage might be memorialized with badging for open water swimmers?

1) Pee while swimming
2) First jelly fish sting
3) First vomit while swimming.......
4) ?
5) ?

I think that would warrant a "get out of water now" decision........depending on the closeness of said animal.

  • These are good.....
I mentioned the idea of "merit badges" to a colleague who was an age group swimmer....
and he found it an intriguing idea.

Seems like it would be a good project for a graphic design class.
Or, a bored swimmer who has artistic skills!

Love the DNF badge. I have lots of those.

First crewing or kayaking for others.
First bringing something back to the beach in your suit. (Bonus points if it's still alive)
First afterdrop or bad case of the shivers after a swim.
