hi, the second half of a 5k swim yesterday was somewhat ruined for me because of constant nasal irritation, like a burning sensation at the back of my nose. i think it may be water entering my nose when i turn to breathe and maybe after a couple of km it starts to irritate the sinuses. wondering if anyone else gets this and has tips to ease or prevent the irritation please.

You could try using a nose clip.

If you aren't a fan of nose clips, you could maybe use a neti pot after swimming, but make sure you only ever use sterile water. Those things can be really dangerous if not used properly.
thanks mlamby, that may be the solution
While I do realize you asked about nasal passages, one of the problems I have in particular is when it drips to the back of my throat through my nose and burns. Here in St Lucia, the water has a noticeably high concentration of salt in it. It can be particularly irritating with just 30 - 40 min swim. We have been providing an all natural, locally made "mouth rinse" which coats the entire mouth.
I personally have noticed that my mouth doesn't burn when I use this before I swim. Swimmers have used it on long swims and their lips/tongues don't become chapped as well.

It may not help directly with the nasal passages but maybe the burn at the back of the throat.
