Time vs distance
I am training for a 10k swim and have to do most of my long swims in a pool. Does anyone use time to base long swims on vs distance? For example, 2 hour swim instead of 6000 yards ( I’m slow!). I think it will be mentally easier to break it up this way as I will stop every 30 minutes to fuel and not have to focus so much on counting laps.

If you have a pretty good sense of how fast you swim, you could do it that way. Counting laps for 6000 yards gets a little flaky no matter what. So checking the clock will be much easier. Use the pace clock to make sure that you are keeping a consistent speed though. That will keep you honest.
Oddly enough, I sort of use the pace clock to count my laps because on longer sets, I'm like a metronome.
Same for me. Therefore, long swims in the pool are equally based on time and distance: set a distance, set a pace, and as @curly says, check the pace clock to keep track. It's also a mental exercise to prevent boredom (and brains gymnastics): knowing where you are checking the time for each lap.

Time vs distance is also a great way to train with others who swim different speeds. Everyone swims X minutes so they can stop, feed, chat and start again together.
Yep - I can't count laps past about 3 or 400 yards/meters. The clock is necessity for me for longer sets.
When I'm doing a long set (4-5x2000, say) I use the clock. It's easier to swim 5x30 minutes rather than counting, since I tend to space out and completely lose count during long swims.
It's always a bad hair day when you work at a pool.
I used to mix it up and do both. Timed swims to get used to the distance and not having to be concerned about how far you went.
A finite distance like a 6000 is useful to help determine how fast you’re going as well as chopping it up to switch out gear or speed-play.

Agreed....strongly. Mixing it up is the way to go. On Day 1, do a long swim, just to get the mind and body away from thinking of conventional multiple sets. Fartlek is a great way to alleviate the tedious nature of that kind of pool swim. 1 lap fast followed by 1 lap slow, and then do a quasi-ladder in a similar sequence.
A few days later, set a distance goal, and do short rest distance sets (6×1000s on 15 seconds rest). Use the short rest to take feeds.
Keep moving forward.
I wana ask u something? This questions is to experians swimmer ( like 25km and Greatest ST))))

15-20K a week may not get it done especially since you’ve been out of the water for a while and only a short time to get ready.
When I was at my max (before a career ending injury), I was swimming about 75K each week across 7-8 workouts.
25k thk
I start my preparation!
Will see!
I havnt time for nothing.but decided to try!
If all is ok. will buy airticket day befor to go!
30km in ocean.waves.wind and hope sun.will be so funy and enjoyable!
Openh2o, would be fun if you keep us informed of you training progress and ultimately your big swim. I've been in similar situation(of my own making) and got by on minimal training, tho not recommended. I further sabotaged myself with a "false start" to training by over zealous over training. Another time I failed miserably when I did not take enough time to acclimate to cold-ish water. But, that's me, Cold is my nemesis.
Good Luck!!! Love your posts

Will post soon!
Crazy time.crazy train!
I hope all be ok.but have so many unknowns!
Ps u know now i drink ( gin and ouzo and waiting 10k man olimpinc on tv!)) All must be fun and joy! I hope be ready for septembur!
Wish health and all the best to all!
@Openh2o I'm really interested to hear how you do as well. I tend to try to train up carefully and diligently to do something. I start gentle and increase over time. You seem to just go for it, which I really admire. Sometimes I think my brain gets in the way of what I can actually do.
I'm curious, do you do other cross training or other sports? I can't imagine that you sit on the couch drinking ouzo and then all of a sudden you go out and swim a 30K. But maybe you have created a new fitness regimen.
I hope you are successful with your swim.

I know this isn't popular here, but to quell the boredom and monotony of swimming in the pool for four to six miles, I used a music player. ("used" because I am still trying to get back after it). I know my pace and I know how long each song is, and I do the math. I have practiced by counting laps (nauseatingly boring), watching the clock (distracting), and then doing both while listening to music. Therefore, I know exactly how long I have swum by the length of my music set, and therefore know how far I have swum. Yes, I am a one speed wonder who never really alters their speed much. 2 mph-ish....slow and steady. It has helped so much with actually being able to not dread training, and I know it is still pretty darned accurate. Probably why they aren't allowed in events!
All the best.
Mlamby that with music is cool!
But unfortunately i cant use player on saturday!))
Music work great job on both earth and water!
I hope be in mood for music after my adventure!
