In Search of Memphre 2020
Registration is open for In Search of Memphre 2020 and 2021, our 25-mile international swim on Lake Memphremagog, between Newport, Vermont and Magog, Quebec, In 2020, we are offering seven three-day windows with room for 1 to 3 swimmers in each window. Each swimmer is assigned a motor boat and a pilot with room for 1 to 2 crew members. We pick the best day of the three to make the crossing, the goal being to avoid bad weather days to the extent possible.
The Search is an amateur swim, founded in 2011 by Phil White and Elaine Kornbau Howley with the goal of promoting a more open border with our Canadian friends and to seek out our swimmer friendly but elusive lake creature, Memphre. Since then 39 open water swimmers have completed The Search. Including double crossings by Sarah Thomas (2013) and Stephen Rouch (2019). Four swimmers have now completed the Triple Crown of Lake Monster Swims (Loch Ness, Memphremagog, and Tahoe), Elaine Kornbau Howley, Sarah Thomas, Craig Lenning, and Pat Gallant-Charette. In 2019, Mark Sheridan, became the first amateur Brit to complete the swim. In 2020, Gen Mackwood will be attempting to become the first amateur Canadian to complete The Search.
The youngest swimmer to complete the swim is Vera Rivard, who was 14 when she completed the distance in 2018. Her younger sister, Margaret Rivard, will be attempting to break that record in 2020 when she will be 13 years old. The list of successful Swimmer Scouts and their times is posted HERE
The swim is organized and hosted by Kingdom Games and the Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association. The following is a list of the 2020 windows and Swimmer Scouts who have already signed on for 2020, with room for more
