2017 looks like another busy year! If anyone wants to help crew or observe a Length of Tahoe swim this year July, August or September please let me know! We have been getting lots of fresh water in the lake this year! The Lake was full for my first successful length swim in 2006 and getting lower every year since then. I want to thank Dave Van Mouwerik for tracking down and recording all previous swims (still a work in progress). We will be adding more information at www.laketahoemarathonswimfederation.com/ soon. 2017 is going to be a busy year for lengthwise swims across Lake Tahoe. Despite record snowfall this past winter, the lake is warming up, with some reports of 65 degrees F in several locations on the south side of the lake.
Fifteen lengthwise swims are scheduled for this year; most swims will occur in July and August; the final swim is scheduled for the first week of October. Most swimmers are from the USA; one swimmer is from Canada and one is from the UK. There are 8 female solo swimmers, 6 male solo swimmers, and a relay swim comprised of 3 males.
Tonight the season starts with Robin Rose of California making an attempt on this 21.3 mile swim. Tom Linthicum (aka Reptile) will be escorting Robin in his boat Ghostrider,

Robin is still at it; her distance over time scatterplot is carving near-perfect sine waves; she has been moving through the water for over thirteen hours--water that has consistently been 63 to 65 degrees F.
Robin was a contender to snatch Tom Linthicum's 2014 record-breaking Tahoe swim away from him. In that swim Tom took 18 hr 13 min to cross the lake from south to north. At 1:30 this morning, Robin's pace was at such an ebb that it appeared she was on track to out-do Tom's 2014 performance. But between 2:00 am and 9:00 am, Robin's pace steadily increased, likely preserving Tom's record for years to come.
At Robin's current rate of travel, she is due to complete her crossing in about an hour.
Congratulations, Robin, on your swim across the length of Lake Tahoe in 16 hrs 01 min 58 sec.
On Tuesday night, July 11, Ken Mignosa of Santa Clara, CA, will be attempting a lengthwise swim across Lake Tahoe from South to North; Tom Linthicum will be escorting him in his boat Ghostrider; Cathy Harrington will be the observer for this swim.

Ken crossed the state line into Nevada about an hour ago, and is being greeted by the pre-dawn.
The water temperature is 66.8 degrees.
Sorry for the delay in getting out the results of Ken's swim yesterday. Ken had a successful swim across the length of Lake Tahoe. His unofficial time for completing the route was 14h 38m 18s. Once the observer log is reviewed, we will record the official time (which is probably the same as the unofficial time).

The Machine Men:

Brian Ross, 61, New York City
According to Openwaterpedia, these three guys are the first relay to have accomplished the Oceans Seven, which they performed between 2006 and 2015. (For the EC, in 2006, they had two additional members due to EC rules not allowing only 3 persons in a relay at that time.)
Tonight they are taking on Lake Tahoe. Tom Linthicum is their boat pilot, in Ghost Rider.
They should be underway at about 9:00 pm tonight (PDT). It is a muggy night in Tahoe.

The Machine Men killed it today! I want to thank Cathy Harrington Observer and Michael Hefernan for Kayaking! There would be no way it could have happened without them! Chris, Brian and Rick were tough and have a new respect for Lake Tahoe! Thanks Dave for reporting their progress! We had a great night on the water!

Hey!
There is another solo attempt to cross the length of Lake Tahoe tonight. This is again a South-to-North swim, and it should get underway at about 10pm tonight.
Ryan Utsumi, 38 years old, from Burlingame, CA, will be in the lake tonight.

Whoa! I missed announcing last night's swim. Van Cornwell of Mill Valley, CA crossed the length of Lake Tahoe from south to north in 11h 5m 8s. His observer was Mark Lutzker, and Tom Linthicum, in Ghostrider, escorted Van across the lake.

A belated heads up that Justin was not successful in his attempt to cross Lake Tahoe.
Also, on Tuesday, August 15, at about 11:30 am, Devon Clifford began a South to North lengthwise crossing. She succeeded in about 16 hours, finishing around 3:30 am on Wednesday morning.

Thanks Dave. Devon came in with a total elapsed time 16h10m6s. She fought a head wind from the North and pushed through getting sick for several hours! She is one tough swimmer!

Friday night (August 25) at about 10:00 pm, Charles Brown of Bakersfield, CA, will be attempting a lengthwise swim across Lake Tahoe. Tom Linthicum will be piloting Ghost Rider, the escort boat; Dave Van Mouwerik will be the observer.

It was an inky black night.
This was not Charles's night for a successful crossing; swim ended at about ninety minutes.
On Monday the 28th August, Chris Layton (Chicago, IL) and Marcia Cleveland (Winnetka, IL) attempted a lengthwise swim across Lake Tahoe. This was a tandem swim. Observers were Robin Rose and Dave Van Mouwerik; escort boat pilots were Tom Linthicum (Ghost Rider) and Clay Prescott.
Chris made it 2/3rds of the way across the Lake before severe muscle cramps ended his swim.
Marcia completed the swim with an official time of 11:26:36. With this swim, Marcia became the 5th person to gain the California Triple Crown (http://longswims.com/california-triple-crown).

On August 27th Ranie Pearce of Orinda , CA, successfully completed the lengthwise Tahoe swim. This swim was escorted by pilot Nick Temmermand; Sylvia Lacock was the crew chief; Bryan Temmermand was the observer.
Ranie completed this swim in an official time of 16:25:58.

The Lake Tahoe Marathon Swim Federation has had a busy year, and it is not over yet. All lengthwise swims this year were undertaken from South (Camp Richardson) to North (Hyatt Beach in Incline Village). We have had 8 successful lengthwise solo swims, with all but one of them being escorted by Tom Linthicum in Ghost Rider. Tom also escorted a successful 3 man relay across the length of the lake. There have been four unsuccessful attempts. There are two remaining lengthwise swims that are scheduled; the final one will be on October 5th, when both air and water temperature will likely be much lower than now.
Two new swimmers have been recognized this year as having completed the California Triple Crown. (http://longswims.com/california-triple-crown) Those swimmers are Amy Gubser (she swam off of Anacapa Island in June to complete her third swim) and Marcia Cleveland (whose swim was just reported in this thread).
Also, logs have been kept on all Viking swims that took place this year. (The Viking Route is a 10.5 mile course pioneered by Tom Linthicum, which starts at Cave Rock and heads in a southwesterly direction into Emerald Bay, ending just in front of the Scandinavia-inspired building Vikingsholm.) This winter those logs will be used to develop a List of Successful Viking Swims, and that list will then be published.
Tonight will be the second-to-last lengthwise 2017 swim season attempt across Lake Tahoe. Catherine Breed of Alameda, CA will be jumping at 11:00 pm or so. Tom Linthicum will be piloting Ghost Rider, the escort boat; Scott Tapley will be handling the observer duties.

Catherine Breed performed remarkably on her swim last night across the length of Lake Tahoe. Her official time was 8:56:17, and her average speed was just a shade under 2.4 MPH for the entire 21.3 mile swim.
Undisputedly, Catherine has posted the fastest time ever for a lengthwise Tahoe swim.
