Massachusetts Open Water Swimming Association (MOWSA) sanctioned swims

MOWSA has a sanctioned marathon swim taking place right now in the waters around Boston, Massachusetts. The weather looks good, but the wind will pick up from the east this afternoon. More information to come later.

woohoo! Good luck.
Those afternoon east winds could be advantageous, if I guessed correctly...
It should be helpful. The swimmer is doing a 16 mile Boston Light double. They are on a record pace.
16-mile BLS double swimmer has less than 1 mile to go. Should be finished in less than 8 hours.
Helen Lin, aka Happy Helen just completed the 16-mile BLS Double in a time of 7:56. Time will be made official later.
Yay! Thanks for posting Greg! Great swim and even better crew! Thanks to Elaine Howley of MOWSA to sanction and observe my swim!!!
The N2N is a new 9-mile OWS from Nantasket beach in Hull,MA to Nahant, MA. Helen Lin was not content with 9 miles so she swam a double! A N2N2N. She swam 19 miles in 11:28:25. She faced bumpy water the whole way, but on the return leg there was a strong headwind with whitecaps. Congratulations Helen Lin!
Helen Lin swimming past Graves Light on her record setting N2N2N.
Just fantastic! What role models I'm blessed with!
Congrats to Helen!
But how did a 9 mile double become 19 miles? Common core math?
We're all just carbon, water, starlight, oxygen and dreams
Thanks @IronMike for catching the typo. It was an 18-mile swim. No Common Core math involved.
I just figured w currents and such a mile got added going back.
Thanks Greg! Whoohoo!
@dpm50, all joking aside, it is a standard that you get "credit" solely for the point-to-point distance, regardless of how far the currents push you. If you already know this, just tell me to STFU.

I'm a newbie in the marathon swimming community, so I know very little--hence coming to a forum where people know a lot.
James Bayles will be attempting a MOWSA observed/sanctioned crossing of Cape Cod Bay tomorrow. He is starting close to 4:00am, so he will have an hour or two to enjoy the bioluminescent jellyfish before the sunrise. James is the only person to attempt the P2P Cape Cod Bay crossing this year! For those of you who do not know James, he always swims for a cause. Follow him live on Marcy MacDonald's SPOT tracker! Visit his web site for more information about James Bayles and his causes.
James is about 3/4 of the way across.
James Bayles swim was cut short due to a great white sighting a 1000 yards ahead of him. It was a 14 footer. James was close to the record pace for crossing the bay. James is safe on board the escort boat.
Bummer about the shark sighting but glad he's safe. Nature does throw some curve balls!
How did they ID the shark from 1000 yds? Everyone who has done that swim could have had a GW 1000 yards away.
...anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
True. According to the observer, a fisherman came speeding up from the east and told them he had spotted a 14 foot great white 1000 yards ahead and heading west in their direction. With that information the pilot made the call to pull the swimmer out.
For anyone interested in a sanctioned solo/relay marathon swim through MOWSA, we are extending our early application/sanction fee of $500/$600 through June. The fee will increase to $750/$900 on July 1st.

Kim Garbarino finished his swim today in 7:41.02.
That's moving! What were conditions like?
Water temp?

Here you are, IronMike.
Thanks @Bridget but I've found sometimes those temps are off. I went to Revere Beach the first weekend of July and holy crap it was cold. Then when I checked it on that very same website, it said smthg crazy like upper 60s. No way. Definitely closer to 57. Cant' wait to get my thermometer. (Household goods from Moscow come this coming week!)

Hey @IronMike, SHHHHH!!!! Nobody asked you.
it was seventy off Rhode Island. I'm not looking. Not bringing my party flamingo pool thermometer. Just telling myself I swam at 54F in May. LA LA LA LA LA.
Conditions were ideal. Flat for the first 12 miles and a nice tail wind for the last 4 miles. Water temps ranged between 66-70 degrees (too warm). The swim goes out on an ebb tide and the turn is timed to occur around slack so that the swimmer returns on a flood tide.
