Winter Swimming in Provence?

I'm going to be Aix-en-Provence for Christmas this year (life is tough I know) and the water temps in the Mediterranean in December look quite swimmable (high 50's).
Anyone have any experience of swimming down there? I'll have a car and don't mind driving to get to somewhere I can get a couple of miles in without getting running over by a boat. There look to be a few beaches around Marseille area in sheltered coves so worst case I'll do short laps along the shore.
